Spanish-Italian Symposium on Organic Chemistry - SISOC XIII

In memoriam

The Organizing and Scientific Committees of SISOC-XIII wish to dedicate this Symposium to the memory of our colleague and friend Kilian Muñiz, who untimely passed away at the peak of his scientific career on March 16th, 2020.

Kilian was born on 1970 in Hildesheim (Germany). He studied chemistry at the University of Hannover and carried out his Diploma research under the guidance of H. M. R. Hoffmann and J. Barluenga at the University of Oviedo. He got his doctoral degree in the group of C. Bolm at RWTH Aachen University (1996–1998) and carried out a postdoctoral stay at the University of Nagoya with R. Noyori (1999–2000).

Kilian started his independent career at the University of Bonn in 2001 and in 2005 he moved to the University of Strasbourg as an Associate Professor and was promoted to Full Professor in 2006. In 2009 he became a Group Leader and ICREA Research Professor at the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ). Among his many scientific contributions, Kilian developed transition-metal-free diaminations, the catalytic Hofmann–Löffler reaction and other radical functionalizations.

Kilian was a cultivated person, a passionate chemist and a great teacher. He was an enthusiastic member of the first Organizing Committee of SISOC-XIII. We all miss him dearly.
