13th International Symposium on Knappable Materials

Virtual Trips

Three virtual trips will be available for the participants of the 13th ISKM edition. They will allow you to know a bit more about us and have fun together and even if (unfortunately) we are distanced:

1. IPHES-CERCA TOUR

A virtual trip around the IPHES-CERCA facilities and several research labs, will offer the participants an idea of this key scenario for the study of Prehistory and Human Evolution in Spain (www.iphes.cat).

2. ABRIC ROMANÍ AND CHERT OUTCROPS VISIT

A visit to the Abric Romaní site will allow us to understand this key Middle Paleolithic sequence. A tour around the lithic source areas and chert outcrops exploited at this site, will also offer the perfect opportunity to understand the role of procurement strategies and mobility dynamics in the NE of the Iberian Peninsula.

3. BLADES PRESSURE PRODUCTION METHODS: ABDOMINAL PRESSURE WITH CRUTCH

We will assist to a knapping session on the abdominal pressure technique for      blades production. The generation of a long blade production for a technological reference collection will be recorded, including:

A brief presentation of the available archaeological evidence, which attests this type of production in some European and Mesoamerican regions.

Brief historiographical introduction about the researchers who have developed these systems since the 70s, through experimental archeology (Crabtree, Tixier, Pelegrin, etc.) Technical principles: the elasticity of the flint, systems of preparation and subjection.

The blade production process will be summarized, and it will be sought to capture various aspects such as the best blades, errors, and possible corrections, etc. The entire experimental process will be reflected: collection of materials, labeling, etc., reflecting the teamwork and production of an experimental reference collection.

An example of labeling, protection, and incorporation of the production to a technological library will be also shown.
