Douglas N. Honorof

Repackaging phonetics for film and television actors on the fly

Phonetician Doug Honorof (PhD, Yale, 1999) spends most of his time helping actors craft voices for performances whether the actor already speaks the language of the scripted dialogue or whether the actor needs to create the illusion of speaking a language not spoken in real life. In this capacity, he has coached actors for episodic television productions (broadcast, premium-pay cable and streaming), feature films, voice-overs and New York stage productions. He has also lectured in the acting programs at the Yale School of Drama (MFA), Tisch School of the Arts (undergraduate musical theater) and Voice One. In addition, he has taught non-actors at a number of universities including NYU (Linguistics) and the University of Connecticut (Linguistics; Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences), Yale College (ESL) and the University of California, Berkeley (ESL). He has also published book chapters and articles in high-impact scientific journals in the areas of phonetics, language and psycholinguistics.
